Raven Software Achieves Landmark Collective Bargaining Agreement
Following a three-year unionization effort, workers at Raven Software, an Activision studio, have successfully ratified their inaugural union contract with Microsoft. This breakthrough agreement is seen as a significant milestone in the push to elevate standards across the video game industry. Key provisions of the contract include a guaranteed 10% salary increase over the next two years, complemented by additional merit-based and promotional raises. Notably, this pay boost comes after an 18-month period without wage increases and a 45-month span without promotions. The contract also prioritizes worker well-being by eliminating crunch time, mandating a minimum seven-day notice for overtime, and introducing measures to curb excessive overtime. Furthermore, the agreement ensures protections such as bridging temporary or contract work, defined job roles, a fair promotion process, enhanced disability accommodations, and comprehensive layoff safeguards. Erin Hall, a QA tester and bargaining committee member, reflected on the achievement, stating that the contract's emphasis on better pay, career advancement opportunities, and burnout protection reflects the needs and values of QA workers. This historic contract sets a precedent as the first collective bargaining agreement between Microsoft and union members, marking a significant step forward for workers in the gaming industry.
