Xbox Introduces Age Verification in the UK to Align with New Online Safety Regulations

To comply with the UK's newly introduced Online Safety Act, Microsoft has begun implementing age verification for Xbox users in the UK. According to a recent post on Xbox Wire by Kim Kunes, Vice President of Gaming Trust and Safety, the move aims to ensure age-appropriate experiences for players. As of now, users are encouraged to verify their age, but it will become mandatory for those 18 and above in the UK to access all social features, including voice chat and messaging, from early 2026. Users can verify their age through various methods, including government-issued ID, age estimation, and credit card checks. Those who fail to verify their age will have limited access to social features, but this will not affect their gameplay, purchases, or achievements. Microsoft plans to evaluate and expand age verification processes to other regions, adapting approaches to respect player privacy and maintain the gaming experience.
