Digital Game Sales Surpass Physical Copies in Germany
A recent study has shown that digital downloads now dominate the German gaming market, accounting for nearly 70% of all video game purchases. This shift towards digital distribution is highlighted in a report by the German Games Industry Association, which analyzed data from YouGov. According to the report, the share of digital downloads in Germany increased by 8% in 2024, reaching a record high of 68%, while physical media purchases decreased to 32%. Notably, a staggering 99% of PC games in Germany were bought digitally in 2024, and digital console purchases rose from 40% in 2023 to 44% in 2024. However, console games are still largely purchased in physical form, with 56% of the market opting for physical media. The report attributes the growth in digital downloads to the rise of digital-exclusive titles and the increasing popularity of early access games. Industry experts, such as Felix Falk, managing director of game, believe that the convenience of digital downloads is a major factor in their popularity. Falk notes that age plays a significant role in determining whether a player prefers digital or physical purchases, with younger players (20-29 years old) opting for digital downloads 77% of the time, while older players (50+ years old) prefer physical media. The German gaming industry has experienced a decline in growth, with a 4% decrease in the number of games companies in 2025 and a 6% drop in total sales revenue from 2023 to 2024. Despite this decline, revenue from online gaming services saw a 12% increase since 2023.
