Regional Payment Preferences Revealed: PayPal Leads in Germany, Apple Pay Dominates in the UK
An analysis of $500 million in web store transactions by Appcharge, a payment platform for mobile game publishers, has uncovered significant variations in payment methods used across different countries. While credit cards account for approximately 35% of overall web store transactions, their usage differs greatly by region, with 55% of transactions in Canada relying on credit cards, compared to only 6% in Poland. In Germany, PayPal is the preferred payment method, accounting for 64% of transactions, whereas in the US and UK, its usage stands at 20% and 14%, respectively. In contrast, the UK has a strong affinity for Apple Pay, which is used in 37% of transactions, surpassing credit cards, which account for 27% of the country's transactions. Google Pay, on the other hand, has a significant presence in Spain, where it is used in 43% of transactions, compared to 21% in the UK. The iDEAL payment system dominates the Netherlands, accounting for 68% of web store transactions. The comprehensive Appcharge report is available, coinciding with Apple's introduction of changes to permit third-party payments on iOS, following a fine of $568.6 million for non-compliance with the EU's Digital Markets Act.
