Final Fantasy Tactics Remake Rebuilt from Ground Up Due to Lost Source Code
Square Enix has revealed that the source code for the original Final Fantasy Tactics has been irretrievably lost due to overwriting, necessitating a from-scratch rebuild of the upcoming remake, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. In a recent PlayStation blog post, Kazutoyo Maehiro, an events planner on the original Tactics and current director of the remake, disclosed that the source code's loss was a result of the industry's then-common practice of overwriting previous code when fixing bugs or adding new languages, coupled with a lack of robust game preservation tools at the time. Maehiro noted, 'This was the standard approach back then. We lacked the sophisticated resource management tools we have today, and game development involved overwriting previous code with each bug fix or language addition.' Square Enix aims for The Ivalice Chronicles to be a faithful recreation of the 1997 classic, with both a Classic and Enhanced version available at launch. The Classic version seeks to replicate the original experience, but the team opted against using an emulator, as it would not have allowed for the desired level of refinement. After analysis, the team decided that rebuilding the game from scratch was the best way to ensure it met modern playability standards while remaining true to the original. This rebuilt version serves as the Classic version, which was then enhanced and refined to create the Enhanced version. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is set to release on September 30, 2025.
