Microsoft Discontinues Movie and TV Show Sales and Rentals on Xbox and Windows

Microsoft has ceased the sale and rental of movies and TV shows on its Xbox and Windows platforms as of July 18. The decision was announced through updates on the Xbox and Windows websites, stating that Microsoft is no longer offering new movie and TV content for purchase or rent. Although the reason behind this move remains unclear, the company has assured customers that they can continue to access content they have already bought. According to Microsoft's FAQ, existing customers will still be able to watch their previously purchased content on both Windows and Xbox devices, and playback and download functionalities will remain available on Windows. Additionally, users can play personal videos on their Xbox devices. For alternative entertainment options, Microsoft suggests using third-party apps such as Amazon Prime and Apple TV. The entertainment service on Xbox was first introduced in 2006, marking a significant milestone in the console's history as it began offering TV shows and movies to users in the US through Xbox Live. This move was part of Xbox's broader ambition to become an all-encompassing online entertainment hub. Recently, Microsoft underwent layoffs in its gaming division, affecting approximately 9,000 employees, following a series of rumors and reports.
