Steam Sees Significant Rise in Games Utilizing Generative AI, Now at 7%
A recent study reveals that approximately 7% of all games available on the Steam platform now openly disclose their use of generative AI, marking a considerable increase. This translates to around 7,818 games out of more than 114,126 titles on Steam as of July 13, 2025, based on data from Steam's API. Compared to the 1.1% reported in April 2024, this surge indicates a significant rise in AI integration within the gaming industry. Notably, over 20,000 new games have been added to Steam since the last study, with one in five releases in 2025 acknowledging the use of generative AI. The most common application of AI is in visual asset generation, accounting for about 60% of games with AI disclosure. Other applications include audio, text, and narrative generation, as well as marketing materials and game logic. Several prominent games, such as inZOI, Liar's Bar, and Comedy Night, have been transparent about their use of AI for various purposes. However, not all developers have been as forthcoming, as seen in the case of 11-Bit Studios, which faced criticism for not disclosing AI-generated text in The Alters and subsequently pledged to remove it.
