Virtuos, Developer of This Year's Oblivion Remaster, Announces Workforce Reduction Affecting 7% of Employees
Virtuos, a leading co-development services provider, has confirmed the implementation of significant layoffs, resulting in the reduction of around 270 positions globally, with the majority being in Asia and approximately 70 in Europe. This move accounts for roughly 7% of the company's total workforce. In an official statement, Virtuos explained that the decision is part of its efforts to adapt to the evolving needs of its partners and the industry, focusing on realigning its capabilities and global presence. The company described this process as a 'rebalancing' act, driven by teams facing reduced occupancy and slower demand due to structural shifts within the industry. Notably, fewer than ten employees at the French studio, where the core team behind Oblivion Remastered is based, were affected by these cuts. Virtuos attributed the higher number of layoffs in Asia to declining demand for specific services and the need to align with client locations. Over the past year, Virtuos has strengthened its commitment to premium co-development through strategic acquisitions, including Beyond-FX, Pipeworks, and Umanaïa in North America, as well as Third Kind Games and Abstraction in Europe. These acquisitions have enhanced the company's expertise in VFX, design, Unreal Engine programming, and creative development. Virtuos emphasized its intent to grow in areas where its expertise and scale can create lasting value, while selectively exiting service segments experiencing weakening demand. The company noted that it needs to better align the locations of its teams with those of its clients to support the increasingly iterative nature of co-development, which is why the current reorganization has a greater impact on its Asian teams. Virtuos assured that work on existing partnerships will continue uninterrupted, including ongoing projects like Oblivion Remastered, Cyberpunk 2077 updates, and the upcoming collaboration with Konami on Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater. The company also announced that it will provide comprehensive support to affected staff, including separation packages, career transition assistance, and opportunities for redeployment within its global operations where possible.
