Apple to Remove Game Without Explanation, Says Developer

Italian indie game developer Santa Ragione has expressed disappointment over Apple's decision to delist its narrative-driven game, Wheels of Aurelia, from the App Store. According to the developer, the game is 'fully functional' and meets current technical standards, yet Apple has failed to provide a clear justification for its removal, citing only its policy on 'obsolete' or 'outdated' apps. In a statement, Santa Ragione said it had made multiple appeals to seek clarification but to no avail. Wheels of Aurelia is a highly acclaimed experimental narrative game that takes players on a road trip across Italy in the 1970s. The developer believes that removing fully functional artistic works due to infrequent updates undermines the value of games as cultural and artistic products. It argues that games, like books, films, and music albums, are complete creative works that do not require constant updates beyond basic maintenance. The studio also pointed out that enforced updates can be a significant financial burden for smaller developers. In light of the EU's recent Digital Markets Act and the resulting changes to the App Store, Santa Ragione commended the regulations aimed at preventing monopolistic behaviors and promoting fairness in the digital marketplace. As a result, Wheels of Aurelia is currently available for free on the App Store, allowing as many people as possible to play the game before it is delisted.
