Brazilian Regulatory Body Advocates for Action Against Apple Over Alleged Monopolistic Practices

Brazil's antitrust authority has suggested that Apple be held accountable for allegedly engaging in monopolistic behavior within the iOS ecosystem, as per a translated statement. According to a report by MacRumors, the General Superintendence of the Administrative Council for Economic Defense, an autonomous agency under the Brazilian Ministry of Justice, has been probing allegations that Apple exclusively permits payments via its own channels on iOS and prohibits companies from informing customers about alternative options. The grievance was initially filed in 2022 by Ebazar.com.br Ltda. and Mercado Livre. In a ruling issued on June 30, the authority stated that such restrictions 'establish artificial obstacles for competitors seeking to enter markets associated with the iOS system, which Apple has complete control over.' This reportedly enables Apple to 'impede the operation of new market participants, artificially maintain its dominant position, and limit the choices available to platform developers and users.' As a result, Apple may face potential penalties and mandatory revisions to its iOS policies in Brazil. The company is also under pressure globally to reform its practices, having recently made changes to its App Store in response to the European Commission's Digital Markets Act. Additionally, Apple remains embroiled in an ongoing US court case with Epic Games, which has accused the company of anticompetitive behavior.
