Techland Abandons Development of Two Unannounced Games, Rules Out Layoffs
In a significant shift, Techland has halted development on two previously unannounced games, but the company has assured that this decision will not lead to any job losses. According to a report by Puls Biznesu, as noted by GameWatcher, the developer incurred financial losses amounting to PLN 135 million ($37.4 million) in 2024, which prompted the cancellation of the two titles. In a statement provided to Eurogamer, Techland emphasized that the changes have not resulted in staff reductions, with developers being relocated to other projects within the company's pipeline. The studio's current priority is the upcoming release of Dying Light: The Beast for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Following the launch, Techland plans to unveil more information about its future projects. It is speculated that one of the cancelled games might be an open-world fantasy RPG that was first announced in May 2022, for which the studio had hired talent from notable developers such as CD Projekt Red, Arkane, and Guerrilla Games. In a previous interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Tymon SmektaĆa, the franchise director of Dying Light, discussed the development of Dying Light: The Beast as a standalone game, which was initially conceived as DLC for Dying Light 2 before its plans were altered due to a substantial story leak.
