Anthem to Cease Operations in January 2026
Electronic Arts has revealed plans to discontinue Anthem, effective January 12, 2026. According to an official statement, the game will remain accessible online until the specified date. Although in-game currency purchases are no longer available, players can utilize their existing balance until the servers are deactivated. Those who have previously purchased Anthem will still be able to download and play it until the announced termination date. The title will be removed from the EA Play playlist on August 15, 2025. Electronic Arts did not provide a rationale for the shutdown but emphasized that no layoffs occurred as a consequence. Released in February 2019, Anthem experienced a challenging launch. Initially, EA projected six million sales within the first six weeks, but the game failed to meet expectations and did not impact the developer's Q4 2019 financials, which saw significant declines in revenue and net income. In response to the game's tumultuous release, CEO Andrew Wilson acknowledged the disappointing start. Wilson noted, 'IPs have a lifespan that spans generations, typically unfolding over seven to ten year cycles.' Reflecting on Anthem's performance within this context, he expressed optimism about the team's potential to deliver something exceptional in the future, given their demonstrated capabilities.
