Microsoft Confirms Xbox Layoffs, Closes The Initiative Studio, and Cancels Multiple Projects

Microsoft has initiated a new round of layoffs within its gaming division, impacting several studios and projects. According to recent reports, the company has decided to close The Initiative studio and cancel the highly anticipated Perfect Dark reboot, as well as the development of Everwild and several unannounced projects. This move is part of a broader effort to adjust priorities, focus resources, and set up teams for greater success within the changing gaming industry landscape. The decision to cancel these projects and close The Initiative studio was not made lightly, as each project and team represents years of effort, imagination, and commitment. Despite these changes, Xbox's overall strategy with its gaming portfolio remains unchanged, with over 40 projects still in development. The layoffs have also affected other studios, including Call of Duty studio Raven Software and Forza Motorsport creators Turn 10, with almost 50% of Turn 10 staff reportedly laid off. Microsoft has begun implementing organizational and workforce changes to position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace, with a spokesperson stating that these changes are necessary to achieve success in the long term. The company has also announced that it will provide severance plan benefits, including pay, healthcare coverage, and job placement resources, to support the transition of impacted employees.
