Britain Introduces $40.5 Million Initiative to Boost Domestic Game Development

The UK government has unveiled a $40.5 million (£30 million) fund to support the growth of the British game development sector, in addition to expanding the existing UK Games Fund. A new UK Video Games Council, comprising industry experts, has been established to foster closer ties with the government and drive growth in the creative industries, which are set to receive a significant investment of over $510 million (£380 million). According to reports, a UK Games Skills Network will also be created to identify and address skill gaps in the industry. The government has stated that this $380 million package is part of a broader plan to create thousands of new jobs and stimulate economic growth in various regions outside of London over the next three years. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy noted that the funding will 'drive regional growth, attract private investment, and create thousands of high-quality jobs.' The CEO of Ukie, Nick Poole, welcomed the government's measures, stating that they 'validate the significant cultural and economic impact of video games and present an opportunity to demonstrate that the UK is open for business.' Richard Wilson, CEO of TIGA, added that the reinforced UK Games Fund will enable smaller studios to scale up and grow, while the funding for the London Games Festival will highlight the city's position as a major games hub in Europe. Earlier this month, the Welsh Government awarded $1.15 million (£850,000) in funding to six independent Welsh game developers as part of the Games Scale Up Fund for Wales.
