Outer Worlds 2 Becomes First Xbox Game Studios Title to Carry $80 Price Tag
Following Microsoft's announcement of planned price hikes last month, The Outer Worlds 2, developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios, is set to be the first Xbox title to hit the market with an $80 price point. Its launch date is slated for October 29, 2025, coinciding with the start of the holiday season. This move aligns with Microsoft's earlier confirmation that consumers should expect higher pricing for its first-party games, as well as for consoles, controllers, and headsets, due to rising development costs and market conditions. In a statement, the company acknowledged the challenges these changes pose, emphasizing its commitment to providing value to Xbox players through various gaming options across different screens. The decision to increase the price of Xbox games follows a similar move by Nintendo, which set its flagship title Mario Kart World at $80 for both physical and digital editions. This move by Nintendo was met with significant consumer backlash. According to Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser, the $80 price reflects the game's value, considering factors such as content, extended playtime, and gameplay experiences. Industry analysts point to global inflation and heightened development costs as key factors contributing to the high pricing of Nintendo games.
