Nintendo Switch 2 Projected to Sell Over 13 Million Units in 2025

According to a recent report by Ampere Analysis, more than 13 million gamers are anticipated to purchase the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025. The data firm estimates that the console will sell 32.2 million units by next year, 51.2 million by 2027, and 104.3 million by the end of the decade. Initially, sales are expected to be higher due to pent-up demand from existing Switch users, but the console's sales rate is predicted to slow down by 2030. This forecast is attributed to the uncertainty surrounding US tariffs and the lack of a pandemic-driven sales surge, which benefited the original Switch. Ampere Analysis also predicts that Nintendo's hardware market share will increase by nearly 50% by 2027. The firm believes that other gaming handheld devices, such as the Steam Deck and PlayStation Portal, do not pose a significant threat to Switch 2 adoption due to their niche sales and higher price points. In fact, Ampere Analysis expects Switch 2 sales to surpass the lifetime sales of the entire PC gaming handheld category in its first year. The firm highlights that 56% of Steam Deck owners also use a Nintendo Switch, but only 1.3% of Switch owners consider the Steam Deck their primary console. Regarding Switch 2 software, Ampere Analysis anticipates a $7 billion to $8 billion market over the next two years, growing to $10 billion by 2028. Although the Switch 2 launched with limited day-one titles, the firm notes that 'Edition' games and upgrades to previous titles will encourage existing Switch owners to spend more on the new console. The strength of third-party content for Switch 2 will also bring Nintendo into more direct competition with Sony and Xbox consoles. Additionally, Nintendo's partnership with FromSoftware to produce The Duskbloods as a Switch 2 exclusive will help engage part-time Switch users. Ampere Analysis identifies an 'untapped opportunity' for Nintendo to utilize in-game monetization on its platforms, with the potential to more than double its market share from 4% in 2024 to 10% by 2027.
