Gaming Habits in America: Over 64% of Citizens Play for More Than an Hour Weekly

According to the Entertainment Software Association's 2025 report, more than 205 million Americans dedicate over an hour each week to playing video games. The study, conducted by YouGov and surveying 5,000 respondents, found the average gamer to be 26 years old with 18 years of gaming experience. The gender distribution showed 47% of respondents identifying as female and 52% as male, indicating a slight shift from the previous year. Notably, 83% of households reported using a video game device in the past year, with mobile devices being the most popular at 72%, followed by PCs at 54%, and consoles at 42%. The report highlighted that the top considerations for choosing a new game are price and gameplay quality. Accessibility also played a significant role, with 31% of respondents considering it very important. Over half of the gamers purchased in-game content, with in-game currency being the most popular. The primary reasons for playing games included passing time, having fun, and mental stimulation. Interestingly, the report found that parents are more likely to play video games, with 82% playing with their children, and many utilizing parental controls to limit in-game spending. The ESA president and CEO, Stanley Pierre-Louis, emphasized the cultural significance and benefits of video games, including stress relief and social connections.
