Echtra Games Shut Down by Zynga as Part of Strategic Realignment

Zynga has confirmed that it will be ceasing operations at its Echtra Games studio, resulting in the termination of development on upcoming titles and a reduction in workforce. According to the company, this decision is a strategic move to align its resources and priorities. Zynga has pledged to treat affected employees with respect and care during this challenging time. Echtra Games, founded by Max Schaefer in 2016, was acquired by Zynga in 2021. Schaefer is also known for co-founding Blizzard North and creating Diablo. The studio was working on the Torchlight franchise, which was revived in 2018 with Torchlight Frontiers. This closure follows Zynga's acquisition by Take-Two Interactive in 2022 and the shutdown of Star Wars: Hunters earlier this year. Additionally, NaturalMotion, a subsidiary of Zynga, laid off an undisclosed number of employees last October as part of a review of its UK and US operations to ensure long-term sustainability. Take-Two has also announced plans to cut 5% of its workforce by the end of 2024, affecting around 580 people.
