Peter Molyneux Reflects on the Demise of Project Milo, a Revolutionary Kinect Game

Some games never see the light of day, instead becoming the subject of enduring fascination, like Rockstar's Agent or Star Wars 1313. Peter Molyneux, a veteran game developer, has had his share of cancelled projects, including the original Xbox game BC. However, his most notable lost project is arguably Project Milo, a tech demo revealed alongside the Kinect device at E3 2009. The game, later known as Milo & Kate, allowed players to interact with a young character using voice and gesture commands, generating significant buzz at the time. Molyneux recently shared his account of the project's demise at Nordic Game 2025, citing Microsoft's changing priorities and the limitations of the Kinect device as key factors. The device's field-of-view was significantly reduced to make it more affordable, rendering the game's original concept unviable. Molyneux expressed his disappointment, stating that the game was meant to be a heartfelt experience, allowing players to form a bond with the character Milo. Although the game was never completed, Molyneux still considers it a magical concept that explored the beauty of human connection.
