Lost in Cult Introduces New Physical Games Publishing Arm
Lost in Cult has announced the launch of its physical games publishing label, expanding its reach from independent book publishing and design. The new venture aims to produce high-quality retail releases and limited collector's editions, known as 'Editions', to preserve games and their artistic value. Initially, the label will release three titles for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, including Thank Goodness You're Here, Immortality, and The Excavation of Hob's Barrow. Notably, these games will feature the entire experience on the disc or cartridge, eliminating the need for download codes or internet connectivity. Retail editions will be widely available online and in-store through PM Studio's distribution network. In contrast, the limited 'Editions' will be sold exclusively on Lost in Cult's website, with quantities ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 units per title. These special releases will boast unique outer slipcase artwork, variant covers, posters, collector's checklists, and booklets containing developer interviews and essays. According to Ryan Brown, head of publishing at Lost in Cult, the goal is to set a new standard for physical games, prioritizing both game preservation and the artistic story behind each title. Brown emphasized that their retail releases ensure everyone can own and play their favorite games without internet constraints. Lost in Cult has also partnered with DoesItPlay?, a community dedicated to testing physical releases for offline functionality. Clemens Istel, owner of DoesItPlay?, expressed pride in collaborating with Lost in Cult, given their shared vision on game preservation and the importance of video games as an art form. Istel highlighted the community's rigorous testing process, having evaluated over 2600 titles, and welcomed the opportunity to work with Lost in Cult to guarantee high-quality physical releases that will stand the test of time.
