Square Enix Sees Profit Surge Amid Strategic Overhaul Despite Slowing Game Sales

Square Enix has unveiled its financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, revealing a decline in net sales, largely due to a lack of major releases comparable to the previous year's Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. However, the company experienced a significant increase in operating income and profit, partly attributed to the better-than-expected performance of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. As part of its ongoing strategic shift, Square Enix is focusing on optimizing development operations, prioritizing quality over quantity, and emphasizing multiformat development. Key financial highlights include net sales of ¥324.5 billion, down 8.9% year-over-year, and operating income of ¥40.58 billion, up 24.6% year-over-year. The company's HD-Games segment saw a drop in net sales but turned profitable due to reduced development costs and advertising expenses. New releases such as Life is Strange: Double Exposure and Visions of Mana also contributed to the segment's performance. The launch of Final Fantasy XIV's Dawntrail expansion boosted net sales and operating income in the MMO Game sub-segment. However, the Games for Smart Devices/PC Browser sub-segment experienced declines in net sales and operating income, despite the release of Emberstoria. Square Enix has announced the cancellation of the mobile title Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. The company has revamped its development organization structure, adopting an integrated studio operations concept to optimize development portfolios and schedules. This strategic overhaul has led to significant changes, including the discontinuation of some titles and increased investment in others. Looking ahead, Square Enix aims to maintain a disciplined approach to development investment, focusing on releasing major titles consistently across multiple platforms. The company forecasts sales to decline to ¥280 billion in FY26, with operating income expected to remain steady at ¥41 billion. Upcoming releases include Bravely Default Flying Fairy Remaster and Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake.
