Record Number of Germans Engage in Video Gaming, with a Notable Surge Among Seniors

Germany has witnessed a historic high of over 37.5 million video game players, largely attributed to a significant increase in gamers aged 60 and above, which has risen from 6.4 million to 7.7 million within a year. This shift has elevated the average age of gamers to beyond 39 for the first time, up from 38.2 in the previous year. The demographic breakdown indicates that 52% of gamers identify as male, while 48% identify as female. It is speculated that the rise in older gamers may not be due to seniors adopting new gaming habits, but rather the aging of the existing gaming population. According to data compiled by YouGov Shopper, Nielsen IQ, and data.ai, roughly six in ten individuals, or 59%, between the ages of six and 69 in Germany engage in video gaming, marking a 9% increase since 2020, with 79% of these gamers being 18 years or older. Felix Falk, Managing Director of game - The German Games Industry Association, noted, "Games have a profound impact on millions of Germans across various age groups and genders." Falk further emphasized, "The consistent rise in the average age of gamers is particularly noteworthy, as it underscores the appeal of games to people of all ages, with a significant growth in the proportion of older players." Earlier in October, Germany's Minister of State for Culture and the Media extended an invitation to German game developers to submit innovative game ideas and apply for funding through the Press Start: Games Startup Grant fund.
