Nintendo Sees $4.9 Billion in Profits Amid Anticipation for Switch 2 Release

Nintendo has unveiled its financial results for the fiscal year, revealing a decline in both net sales and profits as the company gears up for the launch of the Switch 2. The forecast indicates hardware sales of 15 million units and software sales of 45 million units. To date, 2.2 million pre-orders for the Switch 2 have been placed in Japan. In comparison to 2018, when the Switch was predicted to sell 10 million units with software sales projected at 35 million, the new console's anticipated performance is notable. The upcoming release of the Switch 2 is expected to drive a 63% increase in net sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. Key financial highlights include net sales of ¥1.2 trillion ($8.3 billion), a 30.3% decrease, and an operating profit of ¥282.5 billion ($1.9 billion), a 46.6% decline. Gross profit stood at ¥710.1 billion ($4.9 billion), representing a 25.5% decrease. Looking ahead, Nintendo predicts net sales of ¥1.9 trillion ($13.1 billion) for the next fiscal year, a 63.1% increase, with operating and ordinary profits expected to rise by 13.3% and 2.1%, respectively. Dedicated platform sales dropped by 30.3% to ¥1.6 trillion ($11 billion), encompassing hardware, software, and accessories. The Nintendo Switch sold 3 million units, down 22.4% from the previous year, while the OLED model led sales with 5.96 million units, despite a 37.2% decline. The Switch Lite was the lowest-selling model, with 1.95 million units sold, marking a 22.7% decrease. Software sales totaled 155 million Switch games, a 22% decline from the previous fiscal year. In the last quarter, Nintendo sold 1.27 million Switch consoles and 31.43 million games, down from 1.96 million units and 35.72 million games, respectively. The company released 24 new titles during the fiscal year, including 15 first-party games. Upcoming first-party releases for the Switch include Pokémon Legends and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Top-selling games were Super Mario Party Jamboree with 7.48 million units, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with 6.23 million, and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom with 4.09 million. Recent releases, such as Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and Mario & Luigi Brothership, have sold over 1 million copies. Digital sales decreased by 26.5% to ¥326 billion ($2.2 billion), with the majority coming from download-only software, add-on content, and Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions. Mobile and IP-related sales declined by 27% to ¥67.6 billion ($468 million). However, Nintendo is expanding its initiatives to increase access to its IP, including the opening of Nintendo San Francisco and Super Nintendo World at Universal Epic Universe in Orlando. The live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is set to release on March 26, 2027, and the company is launching the Nintendo Today smart app. For the next fiscal year, Nintendo forecasts 4.5 million hardware sales, a 58.3% decrease, and 105 million software sales, a 32.4% decline.
