Valnet Acquires Polygon from Vox Media, Resulting in Staff Layoffs

The gaming and pop culture platform Polygon is now under the ownership of Valnet, the company behind The Gamer and Game Rant, following its acquisition from Vox Media. This transition has led to a significant overhaul of the site's staff, with several long-standing members announcing their departure or layoffs on social media. According to reports from Kotaku, prominent figures such as co-founder and editor-in-chief Chris Plante, senior writer Michael McWhertor, deputy editor Matthew Reynolds, games writer Tyler Colp, and senior reporter Nicole Carpenter are among those who will no longer be part of the Polygon team. However, some staff members, including deputy editor Maddy Myers and games editor Zoƫ Hannah, will continue to work on the site. Valnet's founder and CEO, Hassan Youssef, expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating, "We are thrilled to welcome Polygon into our family of top-tier gaming brands." Founded in 2012, Polygon has built a reputation for its in-depth feature content focused on video games and attracts approximately 6 million users in the US. Following the sale, Vox Media plans to redirect its resources to other areas of its business. In a statement, Vox Media's CEO Jim Bankoff noted, "This transaction allows us to concentrate on key growth areas across our portfolio of digital publications and audio/video programming, while enabling Valnet to expand its leadership in the gaming information sector."
