EA Puts World Rally Championship Series on Hold, Casting Uncertainty Over Codemasters Team

Electronic Arts has announced that it is halting development of its World Rally Championship series. In a message to its community, the publisher stated, "Every remarkable journey comes to an end, and today we're announcing that our time working on WRC has reached its conclusion," confirming that the recently released Hard Chargers DLC will be the last. The statement continued, "We're putting development plans for future rally games on hold for now. Be assured, EA Sports WRC will remain available for both new and existing players." EA expressed its hope that the game will continue to be a source of excitement and joy for fans, acknowledging the passion and dedication that went into creating it. The WRC partnership marked the culmination of Codemasters' long-standing involvement in off-road racing, which included titles like Colin McRae Rally and Dirt. The impact of this decision on the developers working on the franchise, and whether it is connected to the recent layoffs, remains unclear. Electronic Arts acquired Codemasters in 2022 for $1.2 billion. The news comes on the heels of significant job cuts across the industry, with over 1800 developers losing their jobs in the first four months of 2025 alone.
