Changes to Nintendo eShop Charts Ahead of Switch 2 Release
A recent update to the Nintendo Switch has altered the way the eShop charts are determined. Previously, the charts were based on the number of downloads over a two-week period. However, with the new 20.0.0 system update, the charts now reflect the top-selling games over the past three days, with sales seemingly measured by revenue rather than volume. This change has resulted in fewer indie games appearing in the 'All Games' Charts tab, with more of them now featured in the 'Download Exclusives' tab. The revised criteria have also led to the removal of deeply discounted games from the charts, such as the Lego Ninjago game. At present, only a couple of discounted games, including Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition and Red Dead Redemption, are ranked in the top 30. The update has also had the effect of reducing the visibility of lower-quality or lesser-known games that previously charted due to heavily discounted prices. The changes to the eShop charts appear to be a precursor to the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5 and may indicate how the storefront will function on the new console. The update has also introduced new features, including the Virtual Game Card and GameShare options, to the Switch menu.
