Respawn Cancels Early Projects and Reduces Apex Legends, Star Wars Teams, Resulting in 100 Job Losses
Respawn Entertainment has announced the cancellation of two early-stage projects and a reduction in staff across its Apex Legends and Star Wars: Jedi teams, leading to around 100 layoffs. The EA-owned studio described this decision as 'difficult' and part of 'targeted team adjustments'. Although EA did not disclose the exact number of redundancies, it is reported that approximately 100 individuals from development, QA, and publishing teams have been affected. In a statement, Respawn expressed deep gratitude to the teammates impacted, recognizing their contributions to the company's growth. The statement also mentioned that the company is providing support to those affected, including exploring new opportunities within EA. The news follows previous layoffs and comes after EA reported that Apex Legends had not met expectations during its Q2 FY25. This year has seen significant job losses in the gaming industry, with over 1800 developers losing their jobs in the first four months of 2025 due to cuts and closures at various game development studios.
