Director Jon M. Chu Set to Helm Film Adaptation of Split Fiction

A film adaptation of Hazelight Studios' critically acclaimed game Split Fiction is reportedly in the works, with Jon M. Chu, known for directing Wicked, at the helm and Sydney Sweeney, star of Euphoria, attached to star and serve as an executive producer. According to a report by Variety, the screenplay will be penned by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the creative minds behind the screenplays for Deadpool and Wolverine. The production of the film will be handled by Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson's Story Kitchen, as well as Chu's own production company, Electronic Somewhere. Although it is unclear which character Sweeney will portray, sources indicate that she may play either Zoe Foster or Mio Hudson. Her role as executive producer has also been confirmed. Variety had previously reported on a bidding war for the rights to adapt Split Fiction into a film, which took place last month. Split Fiction, which launched on March 6, 2025, achieved instantaneous success. The game is a co-op multiplayer experience that follows the story of two writers, Zoe and Mio, who find themselves trapped within a simulated world of their own creation. Within a mere 48 hours of its release, the game sold over one million units, and by the end of its first week, it had sold over two million copies. The game also broke three Guinness World Records, earning the distinctions of being the most played local co-op game on Steam, the best-selling local co-op game within a 48-hour period, and the best-selling local co-op game within one week of its release.
