Blue Ocean Games Launches $30m Venture Fund for Independent Game Developers

A new venture fund, Blue Ocean Games, has been established with a $30 million investment fund dedicated to supporting independent game developers. Founded by Damian Lee, former head of investments at Krafton, the fund also receives backing from the publisher. The company is introducing a unique investment structure called SAIL, which provides funding at the concept stage of a game, with up to $300,000 per team, disbursed over two years. This structure includes a hybrid equity and revenue-sharing agreement, allowing developers to maintain control over their intellectual property while providing a balanced return for investors. Additionally, the fund offers support services such as incorporation assistance, bookkeeping, and mentorship from industry experts. Developers will be grouped into cohorts to foster a collaborative environment, promoting knowledge sharing and resource exchange. Initially, the fund will focus on solo and small-team developers, with plans to expand to larger teams through future investments. According to Lee, the goal is to address the existing gap between investor funding, developer aspirations, and player demands in the indie game industry. By aligning player demand with developer passion through community validation and reliable funding, the fund aims to create a mutually beneficial environment that drives success and growth. Krafton's head of development, Maria Park, expressed support for the initiative, highlighting the importance of early-stage funding for new developers and the potential for innovation in the games industry. The venture fund will also introduce a talent discovery program called Rising Tide, featuring online competitions and challenges to help developers gain recognition and platform their work. The first challenge is scheduled to launch on May 1, 2025, in partnership with Global Game Jam, with applications for direct funding also opening on this date. The Rising Tide program is designed to provide a platform for game developers to validate their ideas, gain confidence, and potentially secure funding, supporting the next generation of creative talent in the industry.
