Japanese Gaming Giants Unite to Preserve Historical Development Assets

Major Japanese game developers, including Square Enix, Capcom, Taito, and Sega, have announced plans to archive historical development materials, such as concept art and design documents, from past game projects. This initiative aims to accurately document the history of Japanese games and share this knowledge with the global community. The companies have been working on preserving these materials, with some, like Square Enix and Bandai Namco, having already made significant progress. Recently, representatives from these companies discussed their archiving efforts at SIGGRAPH Asia 2024, emphasizing the importance of preserving game development materials for cultural and historical significance. Each company has its own approach to preservation, with Capcom developing the Capcom Illustrations Archive System and Taito storing physical documents in special boxes and scanning original master specification documents. Sega has been actively preserving arcade cabinets, producing faithful reproductions of past consoles, and using high-precision emulation to revive classic titles. This collaborative effort to preserve gaming history follows a similar partnership between GOG and the European Federation of Game Archives, Museums, and Preservation Projects, highlighting the growing recognition of video games as cultural heritage.
