Makea Games Ceases Operations

Makea Games, a Finnish game development studio, has announced that it will be ceasing all operations. In a statement released on the company's Steam page, CEO and founder Tomi Toikka cited the severe impact of global economic conditions on the business. Toikka explained that despite the team's best efforts, the studio's parkour game, Supermoves, struggled to garner a sizable and sustainable player base. Additionally, the company's other project, a PvE horde shooter titled Superstrike, failed to gain traction. Toikka expressed his disappointment, stating that the games industry has been facing incredibly challenging times, and the global economic effects have hit the company particularly hard. The studio had invested over three years of work into Supermoves and Superstrike, with a team of over 20 employees. Unfortunately, despite their dedication, the company was unable to secure a viable audience for Supermoves, leading to the difficult decision to shut down. Toikka clarified that while the studio will continue to update Supermoves in the short term, it cannot guarantee the long-term maintenance of the game's online features. As a result, features such as online multiplayer playlists, the Makea editor, and leaderboards are expected to go offline in the future. Makea Games is currently in negotiations regarding the rights and future of its intellectual property, describing the situation as ongoing and fluid. However, players will still be able to access the game's single-player career mode, including Steam achievements and career mode levels, without an internet connection. The studio, which was founded in 2022 and based in Tampere, Finland, will provide advance notice if it becomes necessary to discontinue online features.
