Ubisoft Introduces Open-Source Solution to Enhance Gaming Accessibility for Colorblind Players

Ubisoft has launched Chroma, a groundbreaking open-source tool designed to integrate real-time color blindness filters into in-game content, empowering developers to create more inclusive gaming experiences. Developed by Ubisoft's Quality Control team in India and unveiled at the recent Game Accessibility Conference, Chroma has been under development since 2021 with the goal of assisting developers in crafting and testing accessible content. The filters operate seamlessly without compromising performance, according to Ubisoft. Chroma accurately simulates the three primary types of color blindness: Protanopia, Deuteranopia, and Tritanopia, and is compatible with all games, regardless of the engine used. With approximately 300 million people worldwide affected by color blindness, this tool has the potential to make a significant impact. "Chroma was designed to make color blindness accessibility an integral part of the development and testing process," stated Jawad Shakil, Product Manager. "The team overcame significant challenges, including real-time performance issues and identifying the optimal algorithm to power Chroma, by collaborating closely with accessibility experts and refining the tool based on feedback." By releasing Chroma as open-source, the aim is to enable all developers to prioritize accessibility in their game development. Ubisoft's Director of Accessibility, David Tisserand, extended an invitation, saying, "We encourage everyone to utilize it, provide feedback, and contribute to its future development."
