Report Exposes Significant Gender Pay Disparity in Influencer Earnings

A newly released report analyzing sponsored influencer content has uncovered a substantial pay gap between male and female influencers across various video platforms, with female creators earning roughly 32% less than their male peers. The findings are based on data from Collabstr, which tracked sponsored streams and videos of any length, and are derived from a sample of 2,414 gaming influencers. According to Collabstr co-founder Kyle Dulay, "There is a noticeable disparity in collaboration rates between male and female influencers in the gaming space. On average, male gaming influencers earn around $234 per collaboration, while female influencers earn approximately $160, resulting in a 32% pay gap." When asked about the report's handling of gender identity beyond binary classifications, Dulay noted that "less than 1% of our users identify as 'Other' during the signup process, so there is limited data available." The pay gap narrows slightly when focusing on the Twitch platform, according to Collabstr's survey. "When we focus on Twitch, the gap decreases somewhat, but remains significant, with female-identifying Twitch streamers earning about 27% less than their male counterparts per collaboration," Dulay explained. "Although the playing field is gradually becoming more level on platforms like Twitch, the industry as a whole still has a long way to go in achieving pay equity for creators." Dulay highlights the differences in content style between male and female creators, stating that "female creators tend to have a more crossover content style, incorporating lifestyle content such as fashion, cosplay, beauty, and vlogs. In contrast, most male gamers focus exclusively on the gaming niche, with less crossover into other content areas. Often, men choose not to reveal their faces." Regarding the factors contributing to the gender pay gap, Dulay suggests that "the gender disparity for gaming influencers on platforms like YouTube or Twitch is less pronounced than on platforms like TikTok or Instagram. Given the popularity of YouTube and Twitch for gaming collaborations, it is reasonable to assume that male gamers may receive a higher volume of collaborations." "Male creators often have more focused content, showcasing only gaming, whereas female creators are more likely to explore other content areas, such as lifestyle vlogs, fashion, and cosplay. By being more niche, men can command higher prices. Ultimately, there is also the issue of women potentially undervaluing their services compared to their male counterparts."
