Mergers and Acquisitions in the Gaming Industry Reach $6.6 Billion in Q1 2025
The value of mergers and acquisitions in the gaming industry soared to $6.6 billion in the first quarter of 2025, marking the highest level in over a year. This substantial increase was largely driven by acquisitions in the mobile gaming sector. A major contributor to this surge was Scopely's $3.5 billion acquisition of Niantic's gaming business, which includes popular titles such as Pokémon GO. According to a report by Aream and InvestGame, this quarter saw the highest level of mergers and acquisitions since the fourth quarter of 2023, when Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard. The report differentiates between completed and announced deals. Notable transactions during this period include Miniclip's $1.2 billion acquisition of Easybrain and AppLovin's $900 million divestment of its mobile gaming arm. Additionally, Take-Two acquired Gearbox Entertainment, the developer of Borderlands, for $460 million. The report highlights that overall activity has surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with strategics actively reshaping their portfolios and private consolidators pursuing acquisitions, driven by growing private-equity interest. However, private financing in the gaming industry remains challenging, especially in late-stage rounds, with this quarter being the lowest in years. A similar trend is observed in early-stage private investment, particularly Series A funding.
