Minecraft Soundtrack Earns Spot in US National Recording Registry
The US National Recording Registry is set to induct the Minecraft soundtrack, a milestone that underscores the game's significant impact on the music world. Composed by Daniel Rosenfeld, also known as C418, Minecraft: Volume Alpha will join the esteemed collection, which also includes the Microsoft reboot chime, crafted by renowned musician Brian Eno. Notably, Minecraft's soundtrack is the second video game score to be included in the registry, following in the footsteps of the Super Mario Bros. theme, which was added in 2023. According to Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, "These sounds represent the diverse tapestry of America's history and culture." The Library of Congress has selected these recordings for preservation due to their significant cultural and historical value, spanning various music genres, field recordings, sports history, and the sounds that permeate our daily lives through technology. Last year, Minecraft was recognized as part of the Swedish games trade body Dataspelsbranschen's Game Culture Canon, an initiative aimed at developing an official cultural canon for Sweden, led by the country's Minister for Culture, Parisa Liljestrand. In related news, the Minecraft movie adaptation has achieved unprecedented success, grossing $157 billion at the US box office during its opening weekend, far exceeding initial estimates of $70 million to $80 million. The film, which was released on April 4 with a budget of $150 million, has set a new benchmark for video game adaptations.
