Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 Pricing Unaffected by US Tariffs

Nintendo has stated that the recently imposed US tariffs did not influence the $449.99 price point of the Switch 2. In an interview, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser mentioned that the company is currently assessing the potential effects of these tariffs. As a result, the US pre-orders for the console were delayed from their initial date of April 9, 2025, although the launch date remains unchanged at June 5. According to Bowser, the Switch 2's pricing is largely driven by its potential longevity, with the goal of making it an approachable and integral part of users' entertainment experiences. The new console features a larger LCD display, redesigned Joy-Cons for enhanced durability, and a custom Nvidia processor that supports ray tracing. When determining the price, Bowser considered the console's overall value rather than a direct comparison to its predecessor. He also discussed the pricing strategy for Switch 2 games, emphasizing that each title's price will be based on its unique content and the value it offers. For instance, the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour game is priced at $9.99 due to its depth of minigame experiences. Meanwhile, the flagship title Mario Kart World is priced at $80, which is higher than what consumers typically expect from Nintendo games. Industry analysts have weighed in on the high pricing, citing factors such as inflation. In a separate interview, Nintendo of America's vice president of product and player experience Bill Trinen reiterated that game pricing is determined by the content and value provided, rather than a specific strategy.
