Minecraft Movie Generates $157 Million at US Box Office on Opening Weekend
The Minecraft Movie, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, has garnered $157 million in US box office sales during its debut weekend, totaling $301 million globally. Initial projections suggested the film would earn between $70 million and $80 million, according to Variety. Released on April 4, the movie had a production budget of $150 million. It has become the highest-grossing debut of 2025 in the US, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. In comparison to Illumination's Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $146 million during its opening weekend in the US, Minecraft has achieved the highest opening numbers for a video game adaptation domestically. However, considering the five-day debut of Super Mario Bros. Movie, which started on a Wednesday, it earned $204.6 million domestically and $377 million globally. Warner Bros. studio co-heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy expressed their delight, stating, "We're thrilled that A Minecraft Movie has received such a warm welcome from audiences worldwide." They also praised the efforts of Jesse Ehrman and his team, saying, "The decade-long journey of A Minecraft Movie to the screen was carefully overseen, and we're thrilled with the tremendous response." The Minecraft movie adaptation was first announced in 2014, with Mojang choosing Rob McElhenney as the director in 2015. The choice was later changed to Peter Sollett in 2019, and finally, Jared Hess, known for Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, directed the film.
