Nvidia Unveils Nintendo Switch 2 Capabilities, Including Ray Tracing Support
Nvidia has officially announced that the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature ray tracing capabilities, courtesy of a custom-designed processor. A recent blog post from Nvidia shed light on the console's hardware, revealing the inclusion of new RT Cores for ray tracing and Tensor Cores for Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) to enhance resolution. According to Nvidia, the Switch 2 boasts "ten times the graphics performance of its predecessor" with significant improvements in game engines, physics, and optimized APIs for streamlined game development. The console will also support Nvidia's G-Sync technology, which eliminates screen tearing through a variable refresh rate, available in handheld mode. The Switch 2 is confirmed to support up to 1080p resolution and 120fps in handheld mode on its 7.9-inch LCD screen, while reaching 4K resolution when docked, thanks to an integrated cooling fan. The Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, with pre-orders starting on April 8 in the UK and Europe, and April 9 in the US and Canada. To prioritize loyal customers, Nintendo has introduced pre-order restrictions on the My Nintendo Store. Industry analysts have also weighed in on the potential impact of US President Donald Trump's tariffs on the Switch 2 and possible price increases for consumers.
