Certain Nintendo Switch 2 Games Will Be Available as Download-Only 'Game-Key Cards' in Physical Form

Nintendo has announced that select physical games for the Switch 2 console will come in the form of 'Game-Key Cards', which necessitate a download prior to gameplay. Upon inserting the Game-Key Card, the Switch 2's HOME screen will provide instructions on how to initiate the download. After the download is complete and the game is launched for the first time, an internet connection is no longer required to play - only the physical Game-Key Card is needed. According to Nintendo's support page, these download-only games will be clearly labeled as such on the packaging, along with the required free storage space on the Switch 2 or microSD Express card for download and gameplay. Notable launch window games Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster and Street Fighter 6 are expected to be released in this format, based on listings from Australian retailer JB Hi-Fi. Although this approach is not entirely new for Nintendo platforms - as seen with LA Noire on Switch, which required a 14GB download - it may signal a significant shift for collectors of physical Nintendo games, depending on the widespread adoption of Game-Key Cards by publishers throughout the Switch 2's lifespan. This trend is also observed on modern consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, where physical copies often require substantial downloads. The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5.
