Acclaimed Composer Yoko Shimomura to be Honored with BAFTA Fellowship

Renowned Japanese composer and pianist Yoko Shimomura is slated to receive the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship at the upcoming BAFTA Game Awards, scheduled to take place on April 8, 2025. This distinguished award recognizes Shimomura's outstanding work in composing iconic scores for notable franchises such as Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy 15, and Xenoblade Chronicles. A distinguished alumna of the Osaka Junior College of Music, where she studied instrumental music with a focus on piano, Shimomura has established herself as a freelance composer after collaborating with prominent developers like Capcom and Square Enix. According to BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip, "Bestowing the BAFTA Fellowship upon Yoko Shimomura this year is a genuine honor." Millichip praises Shimomura as a trailblazer in the realm of video game music, citing her creation of unforgettable soundtracks that have not only captivated gamers worldwide but also paved the way for women to break into the industry during a time of significant male dominance. "Her innovative and groundbreaking work has inspired a multitude of artists and will undoubtedly continue to resonate with future generations," Millichip added. The BAFTA Fellowship has previously been awarded to notable figures such as PlayStation veteran Shuhei Yoshida and Siobhan Reddy, the studio director of Media Molecule, who became the first woman to receive the honor in 2021. The 21st BAFTA Game Awards ceremony will be held at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London on April 8, 2025, and will be livestreamed on Twitch, with Ninja Theory's Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 garnering an impressive 11 award nominations.
