Scopely Purchases Niantic, the Developer of Pokémon Go, in a $3.5 Billion Deal

In a significant move, Niantic, the renowned developer of Pokémon Go, has entered into an agreement to be acquired by Scopely, a subsidiary of Savvy Games Group, in a deal valued at $3.5 billion. This acquisition encompasses Niantic's entire game development team, as well as its notable games, including Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now. Additionally, the deal includes the companion apps and services Campfire and Wayfarer, with Scopely set to assume control of Niantic's popular live events, such as Pokémon Go Fest. According to John Hanke, founder and CEO of Niantic, the company's games have consistently served as a bridge to connect people and inspire exploration, and he is confident that they will continue to do so under Scopely's ownership. Hanke emphasized that Scopely shares Niantic's focus on building and operating exceptional live services and has a proven track record of working with prominent intellectual properties, while also prioritizing its player communities and game-making teams. He believes that this partnership will be beneficial for players and will ensure the long-term support and investment necessary for Niantic's games to endure as 'forever games.' The acquisition comes after Scopely was acquired by Savvy Games Group in July 2023 for $4.9 billion. Saudi Arabia has been increasingly active in the gaming and esports industry, with investments totaling $38 billion via its Public Investment Fund, which has stakes in companies such as Electronic Arts, Nintendo, Nexon, and Capcom. However, these investments have been met with controversy due to Saudi Arabia's poor human rights record, particularly regarding gender inequality and the criminalization of homosexuality.
