Night School Studio Reduces Staff Following Netflix Acquisition
Night School Studio, the renowned developer of Oxenfree, has undergone a round of layoffs, with the exact number of affected staff members remaining undisclosed. The studio, which was acquired by Netflix in 2021, reportedly informed its team of the cuts last month, leaving many employees surprised. Although Netflix has declined to comment publicly on the matter, it is understood that the reduced workforce will not hinder the development of current games. This move follows the cancellation of six games by Netflix earlier this month as part of its efforts to refine its portfolio based on user preferences. The gaming industry has witnessed significant job losses in recent weeks, with nearly 1000 developers affected by cuts and closures at various companies, including Freejam, Splash Damage, and Ubisoft. Similar layoffs have been reported at ProbablyMonsters, Iron Galaxy, and Sumo Group, as well as at Liquid Sword, NetEase Games, and Toast Interactive.
