Renowned Art Director Viktor Antonov, Behind Half-Life 2, Passes Away
Viktor Antonov, the esteemed art director of Half-Life 2, has passed away at the age of 52. The news was announced by Marc Laidlaw, former lead writer at Valve, who expressed his sadness and admiration for Antonov's work in a social media post. Laidlaw described Antonov as a "brilliant and original" artist who made significant contributions to the gaming industry. Condolences poured in from former colleagues, including Raphaƫl Colantonio, founder of Arkane and WolfEye Studios, who praised Antonov's instrumental role in the success of Arkane Studios and his inspiring presence. Antonov's career in the gaming industry began in 1997 as a map painter for Redneck Rampage. He later joined Valve in 2004, where he played a crucial role in shaping the artistic vision of Half-Life 2. Antonov went on to work as a visual designer for Arkane Studios on the Dishonored project in 2012. He also collaborated on several other notable titles, including Fallout 4, the 2016 Doom reboot, and Prey, in a consulting capacity. Furthermore, Antonov was involved in the development of cancelled games such as The Crossing and BattleCry. In 2022, he co-founded Eschatology Entertainment, marking a new chapter in his illustrious career.
