PS5 Achieves Record-Breaking Sales During Holiday Season, Driving PlayStation Revenue to $11 Billion
Sony has released its financial results for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2024, showcasing significant growth, particularly during the holiday season. The company's Games & Network Services segment experienced substantial revenue increases, with the PS5 having its most successful quarter to date. As a result, Sony has revised its PlayStation sales forecasts upward. Key highlights from the report include: For the nine-month period ending December 31, 2024, Sony reported sales of ¥10.3 trillion ($66.9 billion), representing an 8.2% year-over-year increase, and operating income of ¥1.2 trillion ($7.8 billion), which is a 22.9% year-over-year increase. The Games & Network Services segment saw sales of ¥3.6 trillion ($23.4 billion), a 13.8% year-over-year increase, and operating income of ¥322.1 billion ($2.1 billion), a 74.8% year-over-year increase. During the holiday period (Q3), Sony shipped 9.5 million PS5 units, including sales of the PlayStation Pro, which was launched in November 2024. This marked the best quarter for the PS5 so far, with sales comparable to the cumulative sales of the PS4 over the same period since its launch. Across the nine months ending December 2024, the PS5 shipped 15.7 million units, and when including Q1 calendar sales, 20.2 million units were sold in 2024. By the end of Q3, the number of monthly active users (MAUs) reached 129 million, up from 123 million in December 2023, marking the highest MAU count in PlayStation history. Total playtime also increased by 2% year-over-year during Q3, representing the seventh consecutive year of year-over-year growth. Over 40% of PS5 buyers during the holiday period were new to the console, significantly contributing to MAU growth. Full game sales during Q3 were 95.9 million, with 11.6 million being first-party titles. Although full game sales increased from 89.7 million in the same period last year, first-party sales dropped from 16.2 million. Sony highlighted the success of Astro Bot and Helldivers 2, two first-party titles released in September and August 2024, respectively. Astro Bot sold 1.5 million units after 58 days on the market, while Helldivers 2 sold 12 million units (combined PS and PC sales) after 87 days. Both games received accolades at numerous awards ceremonies, which Sony sees as a significant step toward expanding its title portfolio. The company expects further earnings growth in FY2025 with the release of Ghost of Yōtei and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Sony saw a 16% increase in sales during the holiday quarter for its Game & Network Services segment, reaching ¥1.7 trillion ($11 billion). Digital game and add-on content sales rose 13.6% year-over-year to ¥718.2 billion ($4.6 billion), while hardware sales grew nearly 10% to ¥724.7 billion ($4.7 billion). Network services revenues increased 29% year-over-year to ¥176.9 billion ($1.1 billion), with PlayStation Plus sales rising 20%, primarily due to a shift to higher service tiers and the impact of price revisions. Sony has increased its forecasts for the current fiscal year, expecting Games & Network Services sales to reach ¥4.6 trillion ($29.9 billion), a 3% increase from the previous guidance and a 9.5% improvement over the last fiscal year.
