Olympic Esports Games Debut Rescheduled for 2027

The International Olympic Committee has officially postponed the inaugural Olympic Esports Games to 2027, following initial plans for a 2025 launch in Saudi Arabia. The delay is attributed to ongoing concerns regarding the format, lack of details from game publishers, and issues with financing and logistics. Despite this setback, the IOC remains committed to hosting the games in Saudi Arabia for the 2027, 2031, and 2035 cycles. The Esports World Cup Foundation will collaborate with the IOC to establish global standards for national esports ecosystems. According to IOC president Thomas Bach, a clear roadmap is now in place for the historic first-ever Olympic Esports Games, with the journey beginning this year. Notably, esports made its debut in the 2022 Commonwealth Games but will not be featured in the 2026 event. Saudi Arabia has been increasingly active in the gaming industry, investing $38 billion through its Public Investment Fund in companies such as Electronic Arts, Nintendo, Nexon, and Capcom, although these investments have been marred by controversy due to the country's human rights record.
