Relic Entertainment Unveils New Strategic Direction
Following its independence from Sega in March 2024, Relic Entertainment has initiated a new business approach. In an interview with Game Developer, CEO Justin Dowdeswell outlined the studio's focus on three key areas: supporting existing titles, developing games with narrower scope, and reviving classic franchises through remasters, re-releases, or new projects. Dowdeswell emphasized that the new strategy will not involve layoffs, contrasting with the redundancies that occurred last April after the Sega sale. He noted, 'Our revamped strategy enables us to meet our business requirements while maintaining the agility to capitalize on market opportunities.' By adopting a model of smaller teams and shorter development cycles, Relic aims to bring games to market within a one- to two-year timeframe, with budgets adjusted according to project scope. Dowdeswell expressed confidence in the studio's ability to deliver innovative, high-quality games that resonate with players globally by leveraging its independence and core strengths.
