Sony Issues Apology for Widespread Outage Affecting PlayStation Network
Following a nearly 24-hour disruption, Sony has extended an apology to its user base after the PlayStation Network experienced a global outage over the weekend. Although the exact cause remains undisclosed, with the company attributing it to an "operational issue" upon resolving the matter on February 10, the impact was far-reaching, affecting various aspects of PlayStation's services. This included account management, multiplayer capabilities, PlayStation Video, the PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct. Additionally, some PS5 users encountered issues during "offline" gameplay due to the inability to verify game permissions and licenses. The outage coincided with Capcom's limited-time open play test for Monster Hunter Wilds, prompting the developer to extend the test by an extra day. As a gesture of goodwill, Sony is providing a five-day extension to all affected PlayStation Plus subscribers, though this offer does not apply to players of free-to-play titles like Fortnite and Roblox, who do not require a subscription for online play.
