Electronic Arts Posts Disappointing Q3 Results Amid Declines in Revenue and Net Bookings

Electronic Arts has released its Q3 financial results for FY25, revealing a decline in revenue and net bookings. CEO Andrew Wilson expressed disappointment, stating it was not the financial performance the company had anticipated or desired. This underwhelming outcome was largely driven by the temporary underperformance of EA Sports FC 25. Prior to the official release, EA had revised its full-year and Q3 guidance due to two of its key franchises, EA Sports FC and Dragon Age, not meeting financial expectations. Key highlights from the report include: Revenue of $1.88 billion, marking a 3% year-on-year decrease; Net income of $293 million, representing a 1% year-on-year increase; and Net bookings of $2.22 billion, down 6% year-on-year. EA Sports FC 25 had a stable launch in September 2024 but failed to maintain momentum throughout the quarter. The Global Football franchise experienced a mid-single-digit decline year-over-year, resulting in lower-than-expected sales of FC 25. According to Wilson, this was due to players opting to stay with previous iterations of the franchise during the holiday season, coupled with lower-than-expected engagement stemming from specific balance issues. An update was implemented on January 16, 2025, alongside the Team of the Year event, which garnered a strong response and positive gameplay sentiment from the community, leading to player retention surpassing expectations the following month. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, launched on October 31, 2024, had a high-quality launch but underperformed financially due to its failure to resonate with a broad audience in a highly competitive market. CFO Stuart Canfield emphasized the importance of reallocating resources towards the most significant and highest-potential opportunities. Recent developments include BioWare reimagining its operations, with staff redeployed to other EA teams as development continues on the next Mass Effect game. Additionally, the next Battlefield is slated for release in 2026, with the launch of the community test program, Battlefield Labs, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response. Apex Legends saw a year-over-year decline in net bookings but performed in line with expectations. The Sims franchise experienced year-over-year growth following the release of creator kits for The Sims 4 and the launch of MySims: Cozy Bundle, which outperformed expectations. Looking ahead to Q4, EA forecasts net bookings of $1.44 billion to $1.59 billion, representing a decline of 13% compared to its previous forecast and a 4% year-on-year decrease. Canfield attributed this decline to decreases in Global Football and Apex Legends, partially offset by the release of Split Fiction. Despite the disappointing Q3 results, EA remains focused on player feedback, adapting games and services to reflect evolving player preferences, and refining its portfolio for sustainable growth.
