Meta's Reality Labs Suffers $4.4 Billion Loss Despite $1 Billion Revenue

Meta's latest financial report, covering the quarter that ended on December 31, 2024, reveals a significant loss of $4.97 billion in its Reality Labs division, which focuses on augmented and virtual reality. This loss occurred despite the division generating $1.08 billion in revenue from the sales of its Meta Quest hardware. The Reality Labs division has now reported four consecutive losses, with the previous losses being $3.8 billion, $4.5 billion, and $4.4 billion in the preceding quarters. As a result, the total loss for the Reality Labs segment over the last 12 months has reached $17.7 billion, exceeding the $16.1 billion loss reported in December 2023. According to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, these losses are largely attributed to the ongoing research and development efforts in Reality Labs and the development of Meta's Metaverse project. Zuckerberg expressed optimism, stating that the next 12 months will be a critical period for these initiatives. Recently, Meta announced plans for performance-based restructuring, which will affect 5% of its workforce.
