Square Enix Denounces Final Fantasy 14 Mod for Unauthorized Player Tracking and Considers Legal Measures

Naoki Yoshida, the producer and director of Final Fantasy 14, has publicly denounced a mod known as 'Playerscope' that has been accused of secretly tracking players' activities across multiple characters without their consent. Yoshida acknowledged the existence of third-party tools that can access certain character information not normally visible during gameplay, which can potentially be used to deduce parts of a player's internal account ID and correlate it with other characters on the same account. However, he emphasized that these tools cannot be used to access sensitive information such as addresses or payment details associated with a user's Square Enix account. The development and operations teams at Square Enix have called for the removal of the mod from public repositories and are pursuing legal action against its creators. Yoshida reassured players that Square Enix is committed to providing a safe gaming environment and urged them to avoid using third-party tools, which are prohibited under the game's user agreement.
